The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a scientific instrument of extreme sensitivity. Because of its finite size, the telescope is subject to a tidal force from the planet's gravitational field (much like the way the world's oceans experience tidal forces due to the moon's gravity). If this tidal force is too large, the stress may affect the desired operation of the telescope. In this problem, treat the HST like a uniform cylinder with length and diameter orbiting with its center of mass at an altitude ℎ above the surface of Earth, which has radius and mass . Find an approximate expression, to first order, in the satellite's dimensions ( or , or both) for the ratio of the maximum tidal acceleration of the satellite to the centripetal acceleration of its center of mass.
Note that your approximation scheme should involve the use of the binomial theorem which, to first order in , gives
(1+)≈1+
as long as is a real number and ||<1.

An astronomer at the equator measures the doppler shift of sunlight at sunset. from this, she calculates that earth’s tangential velocity at the equator is 465 m/s. the centripetal acceleration at the equator is 3.41  10 2 m/s 2 . use this data to calculate earth’s radius.

The air in an automobile tire with a volume of 2.60 ft3 is at 70°f and 21 psig. determine the amount of air that must be added to raise the pressure to the recommended value of 30 psig. assume the atmospheric pressure to be 14.6 psia and the temperature and the volume to remain constant. the gas constant of air is ru = 53.34ft⋅lbflbm⋅r(1 psia144 lbf/ft2) = 0.3704 psia⋅ft3lbm⋅r the amount of air that must be added to raise the pressure is lbm

Place several e-field sensors at a few points on different equipotential lines, and look at the relationship between the electric field and the equipotential lines. which statement is true? 1-at any point, the electric field is perpendicular to the equipotential line at that point, and it is directed toward lines of higher voltages. 2-at any point, the electric field is perpendicular to the equipotential line at that point, and it is directed toward lines of lower voltages. 3-at any point, the electric field is parallel to the equipotential line at that point.
