Why have plants in the alpine biome adapted to survive on limited nutrients?

The alpine biome is found in mountain regions of Andes and Alps. The biome remains dry, cold and receives very low precipitation. The biome receives very low sunlight. Most of the plants are adapted to survive on sandy, low nutrient content soil. Most plants adapt to have small height as windy and cold atmosphere does not allow the growth of tall trees.
