There are many barriers to effective listening. Most of these barriers come from within although physical barriers such as noise and other external distractions can be a problem. To be an effective and active listener audience members have to suspend their judgments, preconceived notions, and control their initial emotional response to potentially receive the speaker's message. Open-mindedness also is a huge part of being a good listener.
