Telescopes that use traditional glass lenses and mirrors to let us see objects far away in space are just one possibility. After all, visible light is only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Research telescopes used to investigate a different band of the electromagnetic spectrum than visible light. 1.) How does the type of telescope you researched produce images, does it use glass lenses and mirrors?
2.) Can the telescope be used on Earth or does it have to be put into space? Explain why.
3.) Describe one famous example of a telescope that is used to examine the EM band you chose. When was it made? How big is it?
4.) Describe an interesting discovery that has been made using this type of telescope.

NASAs new James Webb Space Telescope has an estimated cost of approximately $8 billion dollars. To put this in perspective, this is about the cost of buying 21 Boeing 747 Jumbo jets.

5.) Do you think the cost of the telescope is appropriate? Why or why not?

Asolid cylinder and a cylindrical shell have the same mass, same radius, and turn on frictionless, horizontal axles. the cylindrical shell has light-weight spokes connecting the shell to the axle. a rope is wrapped around each cylinder and tied to blocks of equal masses that are held the same height above the ground. both blocks are released simultaneously. the ropes do not slip. which block hits the ground first? or is it a tie?

Large electric fields in cell membranes cause ions to move through the cell wall. the field strength in a typical membrane is 1.0 x 10 7 n/c. what is the magnitude of the force on a calcium ion with charge +e? what is its acceleration? is it possible for a particle with the same charge as as calcium to have a different acceleration if placed at this location? what would change the acceleration: mass of the particle? diameter of the particle?
