Please Help!! The olympics have a new game: drag a block. You drag a block. During the final race, you find yourself neck and neck with your opponent. You pull your block at an angle of 15 degrees. With only 10 seconds left on the clock, you apply a force of 45 Newtons.
The coefficient of friction between the floor and the box is .2. You were traveling with an initial velocity of 5m/s. The mass of the block is 15kg. Your opponent is traveling 40m ahead of you, traveling at a constant velocity of 6m/s. Given these circumstances, is it possible to win? If so, by how much?

1. Let’s think this problem out. What is our end goal?

2.What is the displacement of your opponent in that 10seconds
(60m)

Now that we calculated the first displacement, we have to get your displacement. To calculate your displacement, we’ll need one of our four equations(kinematic equations) Let’s see what we know: Initial velocity: 5m/s
Delta T: 10 seconds
Delta X : ???
We need one more variable to use our four equations. The last variable we can get is ... acceleration to get the actual acceleration your block, you’ll need to find the net force (Fnet=ma)

3. You’ll pull at an angle. What is the x component of your pull?

4. You’ll pull at an angle. What is the y component of your pull?
5. What is the weight (force of gravity) of your block?

6. What is the normal force of your block(recall: you have a y component applied force helping the normal force)

7. What is the force of kinetic friction

8. What is the net force of the block

9. What is the acceleration of the block?

10. Now that we have the acceleration, we can use the previous info(v initial, delta t and now a) to calculate delta x. Use your four equations (kinematic equations) to calculate delta x.
(104.7m)

11. If you were 40m behind, did you catch up? And by how much?
