Law of Conservation of Momentum: Collisions

1) A 0.17 Kg cue ball is moving at 20 m/s on a pool table and hits a stationary blue ball. After the collision the two bounce off each other and the cue ball keeps moving at 5 m/s. How fast does the blue ball move after being hit?

2) A 12,000 Kg truck moving at 50 m/s hits a stationary ball that is in the road. After hitting the ball the truck is going 20 m/s and the ball is moving 100 m/s. What is the mass of the ball?

3) A red toy car that weighs 2 kg moving at 5 m/s hits a blue toy car that weighs 3 kg that is at rest. After the collision the red car is moving at 1.5 m/s. What speed is the blue toy car moving at?

4) You are pushing a shopping cart that weighs 14 kg at a speed of 5 m/s. You aren't paying attention and you run into someone that was standing still that weighs 40 kg and they fall into your cart. What speed is the cart with the person in it moving?

5) A car that weighs 2,500 kg slides down a hill at 47 m/s into a parked truck that weighs 3,200 kg. After colliding with the truck the two stick together and continue moving down the hill. What speed are the truck and the car moving together?

6) You roll a purple toy car that weighs 3 kg toward a stationary red car with a speed of 5 m/s. When the two collide they stick together and continue moving forward. What is their new speed now that they are stuck together?

7) I fire a 5.5 kg cannon ball out of a 544 kg cannon on a pirate ship. When I do, the cannon ball shoots out of the cannon with a speed of 250 m/s. When this happens the cannon recoils in the opposite direction. How fast does the cannon go backwards?

8) A rifle that weighs 5.4 kg fires a bullet that weighs 0.03 kg at a target. The bullet shoots out of the barrel at a speed 914 m/s. What speed does the rifle recoil with?

9) A bow that weighs 22 kg fires an arrow at a speed of 60 m/s. The bow recoils with a speed of -2.5 m/s. What is the mass of the arrow?

Agroup of students is studying convection currents. they fill two identical balloons with the same amount of helium. one balloon is placed in a freezer and the other in an area with warm air. after 10 minutes, the balloons are released from a height of 1 meter. which of the following do the students most likely observe? question 2 options: the balloons rise at the same rate. both balloons are the same size. the ballons both rise. the cold ballon is larger than the warm balloon. the cold balloon expands and rises. the warm balloon shrinks and sinks. the warm balloon expands and rises. the cold balloon shrinks and sinks.

Asolid cylinder and a cylindrical shell have the same mass, same radius, and turn on frictionless, horizontal axles. the cylindrical shell has light-weight spokes connecting the shell to the axle. a rope is wrapped around each cylinder and tied to blocks of equal masses that are held the same height above the ground. both blocks are released simultaneously. the ropes do not slip. which block hits the ground first? or is it a tie?
