"Recent studies have shown a strong correlation between frequent, long-term use of an indoor tanning facility and an increased risk of melanoma, which is a type of skin cancer. Indoor tanning beds expose human skin to ultraviolet light, which is energetic enough to damage living cells by ionizing their atoms. Although additional research is needed to fully characterize the relationship between ultraviolet light and skin cancer, it is clear that indoor tanning-bed use represents an avoidable risk factor for melanoma, which can be lethal."
