A student must determine the effect of friction on the mechanical energy of a small block as it slides up a ramp. The block is launched with an initial speed to from point A along a horizontal surface of negligible friction. It then slides up a ramp, where friction is not negligible, that is inclined at angle 0 with respect to the
horizontal, as shown in the figure. The student measures the maximum vertical height hattained by the block while on the ramp, labeled as point in the figure.
At point B, the block comes to rest. The student performs three trials with the ramp at different angles, launching the block at the same initial speed Ny for each
trial. The results from the trials are displayed in the table.
Consider the trial in which the ramp is at a 20 angle with the horizontal. The surface of the ramp has been replaced with a surface in which frictional forces are
considered to be negligible. If the mass of the block is doubled and the initial launch speed is doubled, how could the student predict the new vertical of the
block at point B?

During physical science, ms. greene challenged her students to produce an energy transformation. james and jill wrapped a 4-inch nail with a coil of fifty turns of wire. they connected one end of the coil to one terminal of a knife switch. they connected the other terminal of the knife switch to the battery. finally, they connected the end of the coil to the other terminal of the battery. james held the tip of a 1-inch nail near the flat end of the 4-inch nail. jill closed the knife switch quickly and then opened it. the 1-inch nail was pulled toward the 4-inch nail. what is the best explanation of why the nail moved? a) electrical energy was converted to mechanical energy in the 1-inch nail. b) the 4-inch nail became an electromagnet and the magnetic force attracted the 1-inch nail. c) the electric current in the 4-inch nail was converted to mechanical energy in the 1-inch nail. d) the 4-inch nail had a positive charge and the 1-inch nail had a negative charge. opposites attracted.

Assume that two of the electrons at the negative terminal have attached themselves to a nearby neutral atom. there is now a negative ion with a charge -2e at this terminal. what are the electric potential and electric potential energy of the negative ion relative to the electron? the electric potential and the electric potential energy are both twice as much. the electric potential is twice as much and the electric potential energy is the same. the electric potential is the same and the electric potential energy is twice as much. the electric potential and the electric potential energy are both the same. the electric potential is the same and the electric potential energy is increased by the mass ratio of the oxygen ion to the electron. the electric potential is twice as much and the electric potential energy is increased by the mass ratio of the oxygen ion to the electron.
