This morning on the way to school when you picked up your iced latte your barista added 600g of coffee to 100g of ice. When you got to school the ice had all melted. To prove you didn't get swindled you massed your drink when you got to school and found it was 700g. Represent this situation accounting for conservation of matter. Explain your reasoning.

An insulated 40 ft^3 rigid tank contains air at 50 psia and 120°f. a valve connected to the tank is now opened, and air is allowed to escape until the pressure inside drops to 25 psia. the air temperature during this process is kept constant by an electric resistance heater placed in the tank. determine the electrical work done during this process.

Asolid round steel rod 6.25 mm in diameter and 375 mm long is rigidly bonded to the end of solid square brass rod 25 mm on a side and 300 mm long. the geometric axes of the bare are along the same line. an axial tensile force of 5.4 kn is applied at the extreme ends of the assembly. for steel e = 200 gpa and for brass e = 90 gpa. determine the total elongation for the assembly.

A5 foot by 5 foot box culvert is buried 6 feet beneath the surface of the ground. a crosssection of this very long culvert (into and out of the page) is illustrated below. assume that the soil in which the culvert is buried has the following properties: jt = 120 pcf, w = 12%, ko = 0.50, ka = 0.33, and kp = 3.00. calculate the total horizontal force per unit length of culvert (fh) felt on one of the vertical faces of the culvert.
