Question 1 (20 points)
A 1,000.0 kg-car is traveling on a straight, unbanked, dry asphalt-road. The driver approaches a turn and
turns the car to the left into a circular path. The driver continues to keep the car in a circular path for
some time. From a bird's-eye view, the diameter of this circular path is 300.0 feet.
a) What requirements are necessary for the car to travel with uniform circular motion? Explain.
b) A passenger in the car feels as though they are being pushed out. Describe what type of force this is.
c) Calculate the maximum velocity that the car can safely travel so that there is no slippage between
the rubber tires and the road as the driver navigates this circular path.
d) Would it be possible to slope the road such that there is less reliance on the friction between the tires
and the road? Explain.
e) If the car is now traveling along in a circular path on a sloped road, determine the angle of slope
necessary so that the requirement of part d is met. Make sure to sketch a free-body diagram of the
car and show all calculations.
f) If an external force, such as a collision with another vehicle is present, is the car still moving with
uniform circular motion? Explain.

If two students are running down the hall toward each other, trying to get to class, and they have the same mass and acceleration, what will happen when they collide? will their forces cancel out or will each one experience a reaction?
