Two students must build a device or structure that can lift a stalled, 1,000-kg tractor up to a mobile 5-meter-high platform. The only motor
available to them can apply a maximum of 2,000 N, which is approximately enough to lift a 200-kg weight. The students have varying
opinions about the best method to raise the tractor onto the platform.
Student 1
The best way to raise the tractor onto the platform is to build a ramp and use the motor to pull the tractor up onto the platform. The motor
will be positioned at the top of the ramp and connected to the tractor with a cable. The platform will need to be fixed in place as the tractor
will be pulled up the ramp and straight onto the platform, as shown in the following diagram (diagram not to scale).
Motor)
How much cable is required for the two students' designs?
OA
The design of Student 1 requires much more than five meters of cable, but the design of Student 2 requires exactly
five meters of cable.
OB
Both students' designs require much more than five meters of cable.
OC.
The design of Student 1 requires exactly five meters of cable, but the design of Student 2 requires much more than
five meters of cable.
OD
Both students' designs require exactly five meters of cable.
