Benjamin Franklin has convinced his hapless assistant Mike Piepan to participate in an experiment on electiricty. Ben has set up lightning rod, the rod of which extends into his laboratory. MIke is suspended from the ceiling by an insulating rope. To one side of Mike is the end of end of the lightning rod, on the other side is a metal rod that is "grounded" (i. e. conducts electricity into the Earth, especially a "charge dump"). A bolt of lightning strikes the rod, giving it an enormous quantity of excess negative charge. Assuming tht no charge leaps through the air in the lab, explain in as much details as possible, what you think will happen to poor Mr. Piepan?

High schoolphysics 5+3 pts a neon light consists of a glass tube with metal wires at each end. when connected to a high-voltage source, the gas glows. if a fly lands on the glass tube, what will most likely happen? a) the fly will not feel a shock because the glass conducts any free electrons back into the gas. b) electrons will flow directly from the metal wires along the glass and shock the fly. c) the fly will not feel a shock because the glass insulates it from the electrons in the gas and the metal. d) electrons that are moving through the gas will be conducted through the glass and shock the fly.

An electron is trapped at a defect in a crystal. the defect may be modeled as a one-dimensional, rigid-walled box of width 1.00 nm. (a) sketch the wavefunctions and probability densities for the n 1 and n 2 states. (b) for the n 1 state, nd the probability of nding the electron between x1 0.15 nm and x2 0.35 nm, where x 0 is the left side of the box. (c) repeat (b) for the n 2 state. (d) calculate the energies in electron volts of the n 1 and n 2 states
