A dextrose solution is optically active and is characterized by a polarization vector (electric dipole moment per unit volume): P = γ Ñx E, where γ is a real constant which depends on the dextrose concentration. The solution is non-conducting and nonmagnetic. Consider a plane electromagnetic wave of (real) angular frequency ω propagating in such a solution. For definiteness, assume that the wave propagates in the +z direction. Also assume that !" # ≪ 1 (a) Find the two possible indices of refraction for such a wave. For each possible index, find the corresponding electric field. (b) Suppose that linearly polarized light is incident on the dextrose solution. After traveling a distance L through the solution, the light is still linearly polarized, but the direction of its polarization has been rotated by an angle φ (called Faraday rotation). Find φ in terms of L, γ, and ω.

Asubject in a clinical research trial experiences a serious, unanticipated adverse drug experience. how should the investigator proceed, with respect to the irb, after the discovery of the adverse event occurrence? a. do not report the adverse drug experience to the irb since it is a common adverse experience. b. report the adverse drug experience to the irb only if there are several other occurrences. c. report the adverse drug experience as part of the continuing review report. d. report the adverse drug experience in a timely manner, in keeping with the irb's policies and procedures, using the forms or the mechanism provided by the irb.

Your starship, the aimless wanderer, lands on the mysterious planet mongo. as chief scientist-engineer, you make the following measurements: a 2.50-kg stone thrown upward from the ground at 14.0 m/s returns to the ground in 5.70 s ; the circumference of mongo at the equator is 2.20×10^5 km ; and there is no appreciable atmosphere on mongo. (a) the starship commander, captain confusion, asks for the following information: what is the mass of mongo? (b) if the aimless wanderer goes into a circular orbit 2.20×10^4 km above the surface of mongo, how many hours will it take the ship to complete one orbit? (c) an unmanned spacecraft is in a circular orbit around the moon, observing the lunar surface from an altitude of 44.0 km . to the dismay of scientists on earth, an electrical fault causes an on-board thruster to fire, decreasing the speed of the spacecraft by 23.0 m/s . if nothing is done to correct its orbit, with what speed (in km/h) will the spacecraft crash into the lunar surface?
