While watching the clouds pass by, you notice a European swallow
flying horizontally at a height h = 21.4 m above you. When the swallow is directly
overhead, it drops an m= 11.1 kg coconut. From your ornithological studies, you know that
the air-speed of this particular species of swallow while carrying such a load is vo = 6.61
m/s. In this problem you may neglect air friction. Refer to the diagram. Assume the origin
of the coordinate system there is at your head.
Calculate the magnitude of the angular momentum of the coconut as observed by you one second after it is released

Consider an ordinary, helium-filled party balloon with a volume of 2.2 ft3. the lifting force on the balloon due to the outside air is the net resultant of the pressure distribution exerted on the exterior surface of the balloon. using this fact, we can derive archimedes’ principle, namely that the upward force on the balloon is equal to the weight of the air displaced by the balloon. assuming that the balloon is at sea level, where the air density is 0.002377 slug/ft3, calculate the maximum weight that can be lifted by the balloon. note: the molecular weight of air is 28.8 and that of helium is 4.

When you jump from an elevated position you usually bend your knees upon reaching the ground. by doing this, you make the time of the impact about 10 times as great as for a stiff-legged landing. in this way the average force your body experiences is a) less than 1/10 as great. b) more than 1/10 as great. c) about 1/10 as great. d) about 10 times as great.

When you see distant streetlights through smog, they look dimmer and redder than they do normally. but when you see the same streetlights through fog or falling snow, they look dimmer but not redder. use your knowledge of the interstellar medium to discuss the relative sizes of the particles in smog, fog, and snowstorms compared to the wavelength of light.
