A uranium nucleus 238U may stay in one piece for billions of years, but sooner or later it decays into an α particle of mass 6.64 x 10^−27 kg and 234Th nucleus of mass 3.88 x 10^−25 kg, and the decay process itself is extremely fast (it takes about 10−20 s). Suppose the uranium nucleus was at rest just before the decay.
a) If the α particle is emitted at a speed of 5.24 x 10^6 m/s, what would be the recoil speed of the thorium nucleus?

Two resistors r1 and r2 may be connected either in series or parallel across an ideal battery with emf ε. we desire the rate of energy dissipation of the parallel combination to be 8.75 times that of the series combination. if r1 = 105 ω, what are the (a) smaller and (b) larger of the two values of r2 that result in that dissipation rate?

When a vertical beam of light passes through a transparent medium, the rate at which its intensity i decreases is proportional to i(t), where t represents the thickness of the medium (in feet). in clear seawater, the intensity 3 feet below the surface is 25% of the initial intensity i0 of the incident beam. what is the intensity of the beam "10" feet below the surface? (give your answer in terms of i0. round any constants or coefficients to five decimal places.)
