Principal quantum numbers

The distribution of electrons in the atom are described primarily by quantum numbers. Now, there exists 4 types of quantum numbers namely;

1) Principal quantum number; This is represented by the symbol "n" and it is used to describe the size of the orbital of an atom.

2) Azimuthal quantum number; This is denoted by the symbol "l" and It is used to describe the shape of the orbital as well as its subparts.

3) Magnetic quantum number; This is denoted by the symbol ml and it is used to describe the orientation of an orbital in space.

4) Spin quantum number; This is denoted by the symbol "s" and it is used to describe the spin associated with electrons.

Now, among the 4 quantum numbers listed, only the first 2 are required to determine the energy of an electron in a many‑electron atom. This is because the third one describes only orientation in space while the fourth one describes only the spin.
