A0.7 ml mixture of pentanol and heptanol are separated and collected using preparative gas chromatography on a gc fitted with a polar column and a tcd detector. during the separation, why are the injection port and detector heated to a higher temperature than the column? a heated injector creates flash vaporization which allows separation at temperatures lower than the boiling point of the sample. all samples leaving the column must be vaporized before leaving the gc, so the thermal conductivity detector is run at a hot temperature. the injector must be kept at a higher temperature than the column to allow the sample the opportunity to effectively solidify in the column. the wire in the thermal conductivity detector needs to be cooled by the eluent in order to register a signal.

Water is siphoned from a large tank and discharges into the atmosphere through a 50-mm diameter tube. the end of the tube is b = 2.6 m below the tank bottom which is a = 6.7 m deep, and viscous effects are negligible. determine the maximum height h over which the water can be siphoned without cavitation occurring. atmospheric pressure is 101.4 kpa, and the water vapor pressure is 1.79 kpa (absolute). report your answer in meters to two decimal places.

An electron moves with a constant horizontal velocity of 3.0 × 106 m/s and no initial vertical velocity as it enters a deflector inside a tv tube. the electron strikes the screen after traveling 26 cm horizontally and 19 cm vertically upward with no horizontal acceleration. what is the constant vertical acceleration provided by the deflector? (the effects of gravity can be ignored.)
