Atall tower of circular cross section is reinforced by horizontal circular disks (like large coins, albeit infinitely thin coins). each disk is one meter a part from its neighbors. the radius of the disk at a height n is 1/n(in n) for n > 2. (a) will the total area of the disks be finite or not? hint: can you compare the series with a simpler one? (b) if the disks are strengthened by wires going around their circumference like tires, will the total length of the wire required be finite or not? (c) explain why there is not a contradiction between your answers to parts (a) and (b) - that is, how is it possible to start with a set of disks of finite area, remove a little strip around the circumference of each and get an infinite total length of these strips? hint: think about units - you can't compare area and length. consider two cases: (1) make the width of each strip equal to one percent of the radius of each disk from which you cut it. now the total length is infinite, but what about the total area? (2) try to make the strips all the same width - then what happens?

A50 kg student climbs 3 m to the top of a set of stairs. calculate the change in the student’s gravitational potential energy from the bottom to the top of the stairs. show your calculations and include units in your answer. how much total work does the student do while climbing the stairs? show your calculations or explain your reasoning. include units in your answer. it takes the student 30 s to climb to the top of the stairs. what is the average power generated by the student climbing the stairs? show your calculations and include units in your answer. the next day the student carries a 10 kg backpack up the same stairs and again takes 30 s to reach the top of the stairs. is the average power you calculated in part (c) greater than, less than, or equal to the average power the student generated the next day? explain your answer.
