Determine the lattice vectors a, b and c of the primitive unit cell for the face-centred cubic lattice in terms of cartesian unit vectors i, j and k. assume the cube has side length a. (b) prove that the cell bounded by your vectors is a primitive cell. (c) assume that there is a single spherical atom at each lattice point of the foc lattice, and that these atoms pack the volume as densely as possible (close-packed). determine the fraction of volume that is occupied by "atoms” in this structure. (note, this is called the packing fraction.)

Arigid tank is divided into two equal parts by a partition. one part of the tank contains 3 kg of compressed liquid water at 400 kpa and 60°c while the other part is evacuated. the partition is now removed, and the water expands to fill the entire tank. determine the entropy change of water during this process, if the final pressure in the tank is 40 kpa. use steam tables.

Abag of potato chips contains 2.00 l of air when it is sealed at sea level at a pressure of 1.00 atm and a temperature of 20.0 deg c. what will be the volume of the air in the bag if you take it with you, still sealed, to the mountains where the temperature is 7.00 deg c and atmospheric pressure is 70.0 kpa? assume that the bag behaves like a balloon and that the air in the bag is in thermal equilibrium with the outside air.
