Aspherical nuclear reactor of mass 1030 kg in interstellar space is completely surrounded by a thin, nonrigid spherical shell of matter with a mass of 1026 kg (see the figure). the reactor loses 1010 kg/sec of its mass by the emission of electromagnetic radiation. (if this sounds like the description of a star, it's no accident! ) this radiation is completely absorbed by the surrounding shell of matter. what must be the radius of the spherical shell if the repulsion exerted on it reactor thin by the radiation is just great enough to balance the gravitational shell attraction exerted on it by the reactor? (consider the forces exerted on a small portion of the shell.)

You have been called to testify as an expert witness in a trial involving a head-on collision. car a weighs 1515 lb and was traveling eastward. car b weighs 1125 lb and was traveling westward at 44.0 mph. the cars locked bumpers and slid eastward with their wheels locked for 22.5 ft before stopping. you have measured the coefficient of kinetic friction between the tires and the pavement to be 0.750 . how fast (in miles per hour) was car a traveling just before the collision? (this problem uses english units because they would be used in a u. s. legal proceeding.)

High schoolphysics 5+3 pts a neon light consists of a glass tube with metal wires at each end. when connected to a high-voltage source, the gas glows. if a fly lands on the glass tube, what will most likely happen? a) the fly will not feel a shock because the glass conducts any free electrons back into the gas. b) electrons will flow directly from the metal wires along the glass and shock the fly. c) the fly will not feel a shock because the glass insulates it from the electrons in the gas and the metal. d) electrons that are moving through the gas will be conducted through the glass and shock the fly.
