In activity 2 of 5cl lab 8, you will apply your understanding about electronic transitions in atoms to identify a particular element that exists in cfl fluorescent light bulbs. you will have a spectrometer with a fiberoptic cable that you can hold next to the light source that will use diffraction technology to separate the photons by their color. in this way, you will be able to view a spectral decomposition of the photons from each light source that you look at. while the amplitude of a photon wavelength peak is not important, the exact wavelength of the emitted photons is important, as it is this wavelength that connects to the energy of th photon and the energy difference involved with the the electron transition in the material. in this experimental setup section, explain how you will use your spectroscopy measurements of hydrogen gas and mercury gas to test whether there is hydrogen or mercury in your cfl bulb. outline the order of your trials, what information you can save (you can take a screenshot of your spectrum and identify your peaks with a peak labeler), and the logic that you will use in articulating your findings. (hint: you will need to make a total of three measurements and compare the output photon spectrum recording from each measurement.)
