When earthquake waves interact with the layers of earth, it reflects or refract, similar to the behavior of other waves. Earthquake waves moves in a curve path. There are two types of earthquake wave. Primary waves or P-waves can travel through both solid and liquid. Secondary or S-waves travel through solid only. S-waves are shearing waves. When earthquake wave hit the surface of earth it drift/ moves the plates or cut/shear plates.

The earthquakes are produced due to the propagation of seismic waves in the interior of the earth. These are the Primary (P) and Secondary waves (S) and they carry energy during motion. The P waves can propagate in the crust, mantle and the core (both inner and outer). Whereas, the S waves can propagate only in the solid region (crust and mantle).

As these waves travel through the interior layers of earth, their speed and direction are affected. These waves are both reflected and refracted. As the P wave moves from the mantle to the inner core layer, the speed decreases due to the presence of molten dense materials and also there occurs deviation in its path. These seismic waves propagate in a curved path.
