2 and 1/2 cups of sugar was used in the cake mix. Later, Bella tasted the cake and thought it needed more sugar. So, she added 1 and 3/4 more cups into the mix. 

How much cups of sugar was put in total?

2 1/2 + 1  3/4  

Start by adding the whole numbers

2 + 1 = 3

Now, get a common denominator.

1/2 = 2/4

2+ 3 = 5

5/4 = 1 1/4

1+3 = 4
