Part a: the "standard form" for writing down a polynomial is to put the terms with the highest degree first.  for example, the polynomial f(x) = x^5 + 2x^3 − x^2 + 2x + 1 is in standard form because the highest degree terms are kept first.part b: when adding/subtracting polynomials, the variables and their exponents do not change. only their coefficients will possibly change. this guarantees that the sum/difference has variables and exponents which are already classified as belonging to polynomials. so polynomials are closed under addition and subtraction.
