Iam stuck on this question of knowing how to break it down to get the answer

3 x 3 - ( (-1)^2 - 2)^2

Start evaluating the one in the most inner bracket:
3 x 3 - ( (-1)^2 - 2)^2
= 3 x 3 - (1 - 2)^2

There is one more bracket, so we do what is in the bracket:
3 x 3 - ( (-1)^2 - 2)^2
= 3 x 3 - (1-  2)^2
= 3 x 3 - (-1)^2
= 3 x 3 - 1

Between x and -, we do the x first:
3 x 3 - ( (-1)^2 - 2)^2 
= 3 x 3 - (1-  2)^2
= 3 x 3 - (-1)^2
= 3 x 3 - 1
= 9 - 1

Then we do the -:
3 x 3 - ( (-1)^2 - 2)^2
= 3 x 3 - (1-  2)^2
= 3 x 3 - (-1)^2
= 3 x 3 - 1
= 9 - 1
= 8
