In an isosceles triangle the perpendicular drawn from the vertex always bisect the base since here CD ⊥ AB so AD = BD = half of AB = 2.

Now putting the values in equation 1 we get,

$AC^{2}=2^{2} +\sqrt{3} ^{2}$

$AC^{2} =4+3\\AC^{2} =7\\AC=\sqrt{7}$

Hence the length of AC is $\sqrt{7}$ inches.
