What two numbers multiply to 12 and add to negative 4?

12 ÷ 2 = 6

2 × 6 = 12

6 and 2 can be multiplied to get 12.

But we still need two numbers that can be added to get -4 that can also be multiplied to get 12. So let's see if 6 and 2 can be added to get -4.

We can subtract 6 from 2 to get -4 but that is subtraction, not addition.
2 - 6 = -4

To make it addition, rather than subtraction, we can change positive 6 (+6) to negative 6 (-6) and add that to 2 to get -4.
2 + (-6) = -4

So the two numbers that can be multiplied to get 12 and add to -4 are:
