Who Wins the Bag Toss Game?
Kellen and Aubrey are playing the game of bags where they toss a bag filled with beans onto a platform with a single hole. Below is a diagram showing the distance travelled from the foul line to where the bag lands.
Below is a list of functions that predict the distance travelled from the foul line to where the bag lands for Aubrey’s and Kellen’s first, second and third tosses, where is the distance in feet (these functions are slightly simplified and assume the toss is thrown from the front center of the platform, perpendicular to the foul line).
Now let’s play the game of Bag Toss!
The first toss between and :
a. Does either player’s bag land on the platform? If so, who? Explain using mathematical evidence.
b. Which player is the closest?
c. Whose toss has a higher trajectory? What value(s) from the form support your conclusion?
The second toss between and :
a. Does either player’s bag land on the platform? If so, who? Explain using mathematical evidence.
b. Which player is the closest? How do you know?
The third toss between and :
a. Does either player’s bag land on the platform? If so, who? Explain using mathematical evidence.
b. Which player is the closest?
Which player had the overall best toss? Did the bag from the best overall toss go into the hole? Why or why not? Explain using mathematical evidence.
