Suppose you work at a shipping company, and it's your job to fill a large rectangular box with as many small rectangular boxes as possible. The large box measures one foot by two feet by three feet, while each of the small boxes measures four inches by five inches by six inches. What's the maximum number of boxes you can fit inside? Here are some things you have to take into consideration to solve this: - The boxes cannot change shape at all – they must have the dimensions given above.
- It's okay if the small boxes move around a bit inside the large box.
- Don't worry about how much space the boxes' material takes up – we're assuming here
it's too small to matter.
So can you figure out the maximum number? Try this over the weekend, and turn it in by Monday. Be sure to show all your work, and good luck!

Suppose that 3% of all athletes are using the endurance-enhancing hormone epo (you should be able to simply compute the percentage of all athletes that are not using epo). for our purposes, a “positive” test result is one that indicates presence of epo in an athlete’s bloodstream. the probability of a positive result, given the presence of epo is .99. the probability of a negative result, when epo is not present, is .90. what is the probability that a randomly selected athlete tests positive for epo? 0.0297
