In order to solve this you need to set up a percent proportion. I, however, do mine in equation form which I will show you now. You first need to identify the number that represents the whole of something-it will be the bigger of two non percent numbers. In this case 3452 is the whole number because it represents the whole number of acres of land rather than a part of it. If I'm a question there is it whole number then this will be the unknown number or variable. Next identify the Previn by locating the percent sign. If there is no percent sign then this will be your unknown or variable. Lastly, identify the number that represents a part of something. In this case that number is our unknown. It's what we are trying to solve for. We are trying to find out the number of acres from that whole number of 3452 that are not federally owned.

w=whole
p=percent
n=part
*=multiplication sign

So the equation of all were unknown would look like this:

n=w*p

So you can use this equation for all your questions like these. Just substitute the known numbers in for the variables, and of course like always you may use any letter for a variable unless otherwise stated.

So the equation for this problem would look like this

n=3452*0.52

As you can see I put my percentage in decimal form by moving the decimal two places to the left. And then solve simply multiplying.

You will be left with this:

n=1795.04

Which is your final answer.

Just a heads up the proportion is the more common way but I found the equation to be easier, but you do what suits you best.
