the parts that are highlighted in the attachment are te parts you need to subtract
so
we got 4 triangles
the top ones have base 6 and height 2
the side ones are height  6 and base 2
the 2 rectnagles/squares are 2 by 2

the triangles are
1/2 times 6 times 2=6
4 of them
4 times 6=24
the squares
2 of them
2 times 2 times 2=8

24+8=32 is the amount to minus

256-32=224 square inches
