It is often said that learning algebra is like learning to speak another language. what are some of the first steps of learning to speak the language of algebra?

One of the first steps is to learn The definitions of most commonly used words

1) Learn the steps of BEDMAS (Brackets, Exponents, Divison, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction).

2) Practice by completing worksheets, and answering questions of BEDMAS on your math textbook.

3) Get help from your teachers and/or peers if you don't understand something.
