How do you add improper fractions. it seem like there are so many different ways i keep getting confused. anyone know a simple way

Hello there! Yeah sometimes improper fractions can be confusing! I agree with you! :) Well anyways let me see if I can explain it to you in a simpler way! :D So lets start out with 4 1/2. 4 1/2 is a mixed number because there is a whole number and fraction together. 2 2/3, 5 1/6, 7 7/8 those are all mixed numbers! So lets try to figure out 4 1/2 and make it in a improper fraction. So for improper fractions we must always multiply the whole number with the denominator. So we do 4*2=8. Next we add the numerator in! So we do 8+1= 9. We keep the 2(denominator) the same. So finally we get 9/2. So to just double check we say how many 2's can go in 9? 4 2's can go into 9. 4*2= 8. And we have half left over and we add the 1/2+4= 4 1/2 and that's how you get the answer! :D If you are still confused you can ask your teacher or I can help you some more! ;) No probs! :)
