At your school, identify an area where you can dig a soil profile. You will need to dig a hole 1 m wide by 1 m long by 1 m deep. If you do not
have a suitable site at your school, the nearest road cutting can be
used.
Dig your soil profile.
Clean the face of the profile or cutting using the spade to expose fresh
soil material.
Discuss and agree on the number of horizons that you can see from
the surface to where the profile ends. Draw and label the soil profile.
Measure the following and add the information to your drawing:
a) depth of the topsoil
b) depth of the subsoil
c) total soil depth
d) depth of each horizon.
Determine the texture of the topsoil by doing the sausage test. Add
this information to your drawing.
Identify the structure in the different horizons. Add this information​
