Let's say you have a quarter, say "twenty-five." Add a dime--count up by ten, say "thirty-five."
Add a nickel--count up by five, say "forty."

One quarter, one dime, and one nickel is forty cents, 40₵, or $0.40. What if you add a penny? Then, you count up one more to forty-one cents, 41₵, or $0.41.
Write the following amounts three different ways in your Lesson Notes:

one quarter, two nickels, three dimes, 4 pennies
one quarter, three nickels, one dime, 3 pennies
six nickels, one dime, two pennies
