Arthur found a pot full of beans on the stove in his restaurant that had a volume of 1,808 cubic inches. One of his cooks had emptied 8 cans of beans into the pot and left. To reproduce the recipe, Arthur needs to identify the beans that were used. At the store he finds several brands of beans in differently sized cans, all with radius r and height r + 5. Complete the explanation and, to the nearest whole inch, find the dimensions of the cans that the cook used. Use 3.14 for π.   The volume of a cylinder is the area of the circular base times the height, so the volume of each can is πr2(r + 5). For 8 cans the total volume is 8 · πr2(r + 5) = 8πr3 + 40πr2. By substituting different values for r in this expression, we find that r = gives a total volume of , so the cans had a radius of inches and a height of inches.
