El trayecto de Tunja a San Gil mantuvo una velocidad constante de 74 kilómetros por hora; se baja en San Gil a descansar unos minutos y luego continúa su trayecto de San Gil a Bucaramanga a una velocidad constante de 46 millas por hora. Sabiendo que d1 es la distancia desde Tunja a San Gil y d2 es la distancia de San Gil a Bucaramanga el conductor realiza el siguiente procedimiento para calcular el tiempo total del viaje (sin tener en cuenta el tiempo que duró el descanso en San Gil)
