I built the garden by laying concrete blocks on the ground in the shape of a rectangle and then filling the "box" with soil. I want you to help me calculate the area and the volume of the
garden.
Each concrete block measures 16" x 8" x 8". Again, the quotation marks " are a common abbreviation for inches. Each block is sixteen inches long, eight inches wide, and eight inches high.
The dimensions of the interior of the garden space are 10-1/2 blocks long and 2-1/2 blocks wide (10.5 blocks x 2.5 blocks for those of you who don't like fractions!).
Question 1: Measured in feet, what are the dimensions of the garden?
Question 2: What is the area of the garden? (Use the correct units!)
The walls of the garden are two blocks high.
Question 3: Measured in feet, how tall are the walls of the garden?
The space within the block walls had to be filled with soil, and I needed to know the volume so that I would know how many bags of soil to bring home.
Question 4: Measured in cubic feet, what is the volume of the garden?
Each bag holds 2 cu. ft. of soil and weighs 40 pounds. (By the way, the unit "pounds" is often abbreviated with the "number sign": #. So, forty pounds would be abbreviated 40#.
Question 5: If I were to completely fill the garden space with soil, how many bags would I need?
Question 6: What would be the weight of all those bags of soil?
