4. The figure shows Angel Stadium of Anaheim and the triangle formed by home plate, the right center field fence, and third base. In the figure, the approximate distance from the right center field fence to third base is 339.4 ft.
(a) Outline a plan for how you are going to determine the distance x from home plate to the right center field fence.
(b) Implement your plan. Show all of your work and round your answer to the nearest tenth of a foot.
Look back over your project. Answer two of the questions below
(a) In the Tangent Ratio and Its Inverse portion of the project you were asked to identify two major league ballparks, one in which the angle of elevation necessary for a hit ball to just clear the center field fence was less than and one in which the angle of elevation necessary for a hit ball to just clear the center field fence was greater than . In relation to the dimensions and the angle of elevation given for U. S. Cellular Field, what factors did you take into consideration when trying to choose ballparks that satisfied the questions being asked?
(b) The angle of elevation necessary for a hit ball to just clear the center field fence is not the only factor that goes into determining whether the ball clears the fence. What might be some other determining factors, and how do they play a role in the ball’s final destination? Provide at least two other determining factors.
(c) In the Law of Sines and Cosines portion of the project, you were asked to determine the distance from the right center field fence to third base. If the right fielder catches the ball at the fence but the distance to third base is greater than the distance the right fielder can throw the ball in the air, can the ball still reach the third baseman? Provide at least two possibilities.
(d) In the Law of Sines and Cosines portion of the project, explain why you were unable to use the law of cosines directly to determine the distance from home plate to the right field fence in Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
