For dividing the line segment AB into three equal parts we will follow the following steps,

Step 1 :  First draw a line from point A at an angle to the line segment  AB.

Step 2: Set a compass on A and set a width that is little bit greater than 1/3 part of the line.

Step 3: Mark 3 arc on the line and label C on the third arc in the line.

Step 5: Now, Mark an arc from the point A with the same arc length, below the line AB.

Step 6: With the compasses set the width of AC, draw an arc from B crossing the one arc that drawn in step 5. This intersection is point D.  

Step 7: Now join the point B and D.

Step 8: Now make the 3 arc on the line segment BD with the same arc length of the three arc made on the line segment AC.

Step 9:  Draw lines between the corresponding points along AC and DB.

Step 10: The lines divide the given line segment AB in to 3 congruent parts.

2) For, dividing CD into three equal parts we will also follow the above steps.

3) For dividing AB into five equal parts, we will also follow the above steps but  in the second step we will set a width that is little bit greater than 1/4 part of the line and in 3rd step we will mark 4 arc.

x = 2 and m(x)=y = 3

substitute these value in [1]; we have;

divide both sides by 2 we get;
