Thank of an equation as a balance where one set of conditions on one side of the equation is made the same as the set of conditions on the other side of the equation. An equal sign ( = ) separates the 2 sets of conditions.

The stipulation put on the 2 sets of conditions is that they really must be equal. You cannot have something like 6 = 4 which would really not be an equation.
