How would i have to make the first digit of the quotient

You would divide the two numbers 
for example 30/6 
6 goes into the first digit of 3 zero times so you would skip that space 
6 goes into 3 5 times so you would be a 5 on top of the 0 in 30 
therefore 30/6=5
