Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. He was a civil rights leader, minister, and an author. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In 1955-56 he led a boycott of Montgomery, Alabama’s segregated buses; within a year the buses were integrated. In 1957, he organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to promote civil rights. He made numerous speeches throughout his lifetime, including his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He worked for peace through nonviolent means and was instrumental in bringing about the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis April 4, 1968. He was only 39 years old. We honor his birthday as a national holiday on the third Monday of January each year. What can we do as a country to continue to advance Dr. King
