Sure, there could be any number of political parties, but our
election system doesn't really support that. a third-party
candidate running for president can't receive public funds
for his or her campaign, for instance, unless that party's
candidate got at least 5 percent of the vote in the last
presidential election. that's not easy to do, which is why
the big parties stay and the small ones come and go.
