The First Battle of Lexington bolstered the considerable Southern sentiment in the Missouri River Valley area.

The Confederate's fortune reversed in the later Battle of New Madrid. The Union won and the victory marked the first time the Confederate Army lost a position on the Mississippi River in battle.

The Union ultimately won Battle of Westport and took control of Missouri. It was sometimes referred to as the "Gettysburg of the West" as it was one of the largest to be fought west of the Mississippi River.
