Nixon's policy of detente did help to solve America's major foreign policy problems. During the Cold War era, the biggest problems for the United States were their conflict with the Soviet Union and possible nuclear warfare. The policy of detente helped to solve both of these problems.

To start, Nixon and secretary-general of the Communist party in the Soviet Union ( Leonid Brezhnev), agreed to the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT). This limited the military capabilities of both countries, reducing the possibility of nuclear war. Along with this the Soviet Union and the United States worked together in their space exploration program. These events show that detente helped tremendously in solving the US's foreign policy issues during this era.
