What explains the extraordinary loyalty that voters showed to their political parties in this period?

In order to answer that, we would need to know what was going on
in the country and in the world at the time.  In other words, we need
to know what you mean when you say "this period".  When was that ?
Different events and different conditions would explain it in different periods.
