What political party won control of both the house and senate in 1946 (known as the 80th congress)?

Republicans--the majority in both sides of Congress was held by Republicans for the first time since the early 1930s. 

The Republican majority demonstrated a growing support for conservative thinking. This party would be the party to support free-markets and a tough stance on communism.
