The Partido Revolucionario Institucional or PRI (in English, Institutional Revolutionary Party) was founded and first came to power n 1929 as the Partido Nacional Revolucionario or National Revolutionary Party. (The name change to institutional Revolutionary Party was made in 1946.) The PRI held onto power in Mexico until 2000. After being defeated in national elections in 2000 and 2006, the PRI candidate for Mexico's presidency, Enrique Peña Nieto, won that office in 2012. However, in July 2018 elections, the PRI's candidate for president (José Antonio Meade ) was defeated by Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the National Regeneration Movement (Movimiento Regeneración Nacional).

As to the PRI's history of corruption, The Economist magazine reported in November, 2014: "Democracy did not bring the rule of law to Mexico. Too many in the PRI still see the job of the police and the courts as enforcing political control, rather than investigating mobsters. Corrupt politicians are protected rather than punished. Organised crime and graft both remain a part of everyday life."
