These overseers were in charge of making sure that slaves were working hard to produce as many crops as possible.

Despite this inhumane treatment, many slaves were spiritual and put their faith in God that one day they would be free from this treatment. Besides praying for change, other slaves tried to escape their condition using the Underground Railroad.
